When family comes to visit, sometimes it's difficult to prepare an itinerary. So I did for you! Introduce Them to your Life in CopenhagenWhoever is coming to visit you loves you very much, why else would they be coming all the way to Copenhagen?? Show them your life - your daily walk to class, your friends you've met during this semester, and your favorite parts of the city. If you live in a Homestay, also be sure to introduce them to your family away from home! Eat (of course.)I don't eat out much in the city, so finding travel worthy places to eat was a struggle for me. But try out these casual places:
Stay in the heart of the cityIf your parents are able to include you in their stay in the center of the city, take them up on it. I live about 40 minutes from the center city, so I miss the weekend morning feels of the city. I stayed with my mom in a hotel near Norreport Station, and it made all the difference giving me a new view on Copenhagen during the weekends. TivoliIf your guests are lucky enough to visit when Tivoli is open, it's the perfect mid-afternoon trip. You can spend about an hour or two just walking around the park, drooling over the festive decorations during Halloween or Thanksgiving/Christmas time and having some sweets. Other Ideas:

The best week, with the best lady, in the best cities in Europe. I felt like a giddy little girl waiting for her mom at the airport arrival oval. Welcoming my mom off the plane, my face started to hurt a little. My mom was in Copenhagen!! We had the most amazing time together spending two days in my study abroad hometown - Copenhagen - and five days in the city of lights - Paris. Copenhagen has so much to offer and it was so hard planning this weekend stay because there was so much I wanted to show her (blog post coming soon about what to do when friends/family come to Copenhagen). My mom booked the weekend stay at Kong Arthur Hotel, right near Norreport station, and then the rest of the weekend was filled with showing her my "life" in the city, eating, my favorite hidden local places, and a dinner with my host family. It was really special being able to share this season of life with her. Monday morning we jet-set off to Paris and spent five wonderful days there. We did most of the touristy must-do things like boating up and down the canal, gasp at the Notre Dame and other beautiful churches, 'touch' the point of the Louvre, take a day trip to Versailles, and stand in awe of the Eiffel Tower. My mom earns the best trip planner award though. She planned a few other festivities that made the trip extra special. Tuesday mid-afternoon we met up with our tour guide ready to bike, electric bike that is, for four hours all over Paris in the Paris Charms & Secrets Tour. Our guide was a hoot, and he guided us through the city to places we would never see on our own like a secret church that was hidden behind big doors and was completely untouched during the French Revolution and now closed to the public. Wednesday night we met up with a local Professional Chef who hosted us and four others for a cooking class through Le Foodist. We followed him to a local food market, picked up our fresh ingredients, and then made our way back to the kitchen for a four course meal - snails, mussels, chicken, and poached pears for dessert. The chef was also a hoot, and taught us a thing or two on how to make some really tasty food. I can't even put into words how thankful I am for this week with my mom. It was so special to have a little piece of home come to visit me in Denmark and have those mom hugs that I desperately needed. It was so hard to say goodbye, but a little easier knowing that I will see her in a months time and that this month is packed with amazing adventures to finish out my blonde eventyr.
I should be more precise - the past week and the future week. The PastFull of friend dates, movie nights, good food, and multiple cups of coffee - the last week of September has been sweet. The weather has been incredible - around 60 degrees and sunny skies. Apparently that isn't a normality for Copenhagen falls. Good weather sparks the curiosity in me, so in the past two weekends I have...
On an academic note, I went on a field study tour to the UN on Wednesday with my Development of Economics class. Members of the World Food Program and the United National Program gave my class a presentation on the most recent data and happenings within the selected departments. These field studies are part of the reason why I love DIS. We are currently reading about the UN in the textbook, and the opportunity we have applying the classroom to real life are the things that differentiate DIS from other programs. Later that night was International Career Night. This is an event where four young professionals talk about their experiences adjusting to the work world of Copenhagen, and moving to Europe in general. This didn't necessarily apply to me because moving across the world isn't in my current future plans, but it arose many possible opportunities for other students that Copenhagen has for an American young professional looking to start a career in Europe. FutureSo much to look forward too... wow.
Besides a typical week of classes and homework, I'm going to Berlin and Prague! My first real European trip! My core class has our long study travel week starting Sunday that will go until Friday. We'll spend three days in Berlin, and then the remaining three days in Prague visiting companies and different industries learning about European Business Strategies. As excited as I am for the academic purpose of this tour, I can't help but be just as excited for the adventure aspect. I don't yet know the itinerary for the week, but all I know is that it's gonna be sweet! I am an Instagram fanatic. I follow an unseen amount of fashion and lifestyle bloggers, who give me so much inspiration for my own Instagram and my own fashion/lifestyle blog. It's definitely a healthy obsession though! It's easy to get comfortable in the routine near class in the city - go to the same coffee shops, walk the same streets, and see the same things. Following these Instagrams gave myself a new set of eyes for Copenhagen, and presented a bigger urge to go explore. The last few days I have been on a hunt to find the best Copenhagen Instagrammers. Here are the 10 best accounts to follow to stir up your wanderlust spirit. (P.S. all have foodie pictures in their feeds with amazing looking food.)
I've been living in Copenhagen for a month (time flies, let me tell you), and I am already feeling like a true Danish local. Google maps is no longer needed to get me from train station to classes, turning hand signals on my bike is second nature, and I can say "see you later" in Danish without feeling like a fool. Within a month time, I have finally found my mojo and my "places" that I love. I hope you will check them out, and love them too! Det Kongelige Bibliotek - otherwise known as The Royal Library. The first couple of weeks I was struggling finding somewhere that was cozy enough and had the right kind of study vibe to do my homework. I love going to coffee shops, but that begins to make for a very expensive study trip very fast, reasons the Royal Library is perfect. There is a cafe at the bottom floor, great for study pick-me-ups, and then four floors of study area. I haven't explored the entire space yet, but what a great place to crack down and crank out that paper you need to write.
Paluden Bogcafé. This café includes everything I love in life - so much coffee, books, cool locals, and a comfy-cozy feel. Similar to the Royal library, it is a great place to do homework, but provides social interaction and great sandwiches and brunch that the Library does not. P.S. the chai latte is a must. Skt. Peder's Bageri. Fast, easy, cheap goodies. Its dangerous, but so dang good for a quick pick-up. Illum Rooftop. Original Coffee is tucked away at the 5th floor rooftop of Illum with the best view of all time. There's also a bagel shop that is Subway version but with bagels, and a pizza place that offers outdoor seating right along the skyline. & other stories. Let me buy the same sweater in 4 different colors... Thats what this store does to me. Cute and trendy clothes, shoes, and jewelry are packed all around the store, there's something for everyone here. And it won't cost you a fortune! Plus, COS is my other obsession. a little bit more expensive but very modern and chic - perfect for business casual clothes. Tivoli. Copenhagen is home to the second oldest amusement park in the world and it's located in the heart of the city. This place is magical. The rides are fun and the ice cream and candy will make you drool, yes, but the gardens and atmosphere of Tivoli is unlike any amusement park type setting I've ever been in. The magic and fairytale aspects are overwhelming in the greatest way. Tivoli has specific dates when it's open, so make sure you check it out (here) and I definitely recommend getting the season pass so you can walk in whenever you want (cheapest way if you think you'll go in three times or more). |
